I’ve been on a low buy but then a whoops happened

For the last couple of months, I’ve been seriously making an effort not to spend money or buy anything unless I absolutely need it. The first reason for this is because I’ve been sick and had to pay for some really expensive tests and scans. Another, I have a ganglion pressing on a nerve in my wrist and I need to get it removed but I can’t afford the surgery, so I’ve been saving up for it. And lastly, I’m paying off a car. All these costs are long-term and ongoing for now. It’s hectic.

Obviously when you’re trying not to spend money, you want to buy all the things. It always happens to me. This is part of the reason why I make lists. It reminds me of how fleeting my desires are, and also lets me know which ones are more of a constant.

So, what is on my list this month?

Urban Decay All Night Travel Duo – R350
I’ve been using the All Nighter travel spray for years. And by that, I mean the same bottle with the same liquid. I go through sprays notoriously slowly and I only ever use this stuff when I have a special event (which is not often).

What makes this set different is that it includes Vitamin B3 Quick Fix prep spray (I think that’s what it is) and I’ve been wanting to give that a go for ages but I can’t bring myself to commit to a full size, considering my lax spray use. I figured since I like All Nighter, why not?

Clarins Double Serum 30ml Set – R599
This set comes with a 30ml Double Serum and deluxe samples of the Extra-firming Day and Extra-firming Night cream (both a major favourite). I’ve been wanting to try this stuff since the re-launch, but it’s out of my price range. However, at R599… So tempted.

I’ve just finished my Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate, so maybe… just maybe… But probably not.

Stila Shimmer and Glow Liquid Eyeshadow (Grace) – R350
I bought myself Boheme (a lilac shimmer kind of colour) in may for my birthday but at the same time, I had swatched Grace and fell in love with it. I ultimately chose Boheme because not only did I love the colour, I didn’t have anything in my collection in that same colour. Since then, every time I visit Woolworths, I swatch Grace.

Lamelle Recharge CE Complex – R760
This was on my birthday wishlist and I initially told myself that if I didn’t get it from my parents, I’d buy it myself. Needless to say, I never got around to it because life happened and money needs to be saved. I think I need to finish up some more skincare and then I’ll maybe put in my first Dermastore order.

Lamelle RA Cream – R760
I really want to start including retinol (or derivative) to my routine. Apparently this is a good starting point? As far as things go, this is quite low down on the list.

Dr Dermal Texture Correction Pads – R475
The Pixi 20% glycolic pads have been on my wishlist since forever, but considering I don’t actually travel outside of SA and trying to get hold of it here is near-impossible, I’ve been hunting down local alternatives.

I have used the Nip + Fab glycolic pads (both the normal and extreme versions) but this brand isn’t stocked here anymore, and they really didn’t do much for me, so I’ve been looking for something potentially stronger. These have received some amazing reviews. I’m super keen.

Sorbet Vitamin Rescue Masque – R100
I see so many people talking about this mask and having such great experiences with it, that I couldn’t help but want to try it. I have masks to use up, so I stored it away at the back of my mind until I found out it was on sale. I rushed down to my local Clicks and even tried the one near my work, but none had stock of it. I was at the Waterfront on Saturday and saw it on a shelf going for R70. Score! When I got to the till, it was rung up as R55! Sale price on top of a sale price, score! I ended up getting 2.

iPad 9.5″ 6th Generation with Apple Pencil – R4899 + R1999
Yeah. So this is where the whoops came in. I’ve been wanting an iPad for absolute years but I couldn’t justify it. One, they seemed way more expensive all those years ago and two, I had a working laptop. I still do have a working laptop (the same one) but it’s slowly but surely giving up the ghost. It doesn’t hold a charge, I have dead pixels, my keys keep coming off, it’s slow… The list goes on and I think having something that would work going forward was a motivating point.

Anyway, back then I abandoned the idea of getting one and started looking at bottom of the range Wacom tablets because I really wanted to start drawing again. Those too, were out of my range back then so I gave up on it. Until the iPad Pros were launched.

Here we were introduced to an iPad that could be used for drawing, and at the same time, the Apple Pencil was introduced. I started doing some research and sadly found that the Pencil wasn’t compatible with the older iPad models (that incidentally started popping up more frequently in sales). Alas.

Then the iPad 9.5″ 6th Generation was announced, with Apple Pencil compatibility. Cue: angel song. This thing worked on my mind constantly. I googled it. I watched videos. All my ads on FB started showing me iPads (damn you!) and finally, I couldn’t get it out of my mind.

On the weekend, I did the worst thing. I went to go check it out in store. And oh my gosh. I got my dad to check it out. Then my mother (we were all at the mall having coffee) and then later that evening, my boyfriend.

My mom knew I was going to get it. She was like “Tarryn, just buy the damn thing cos you’re just going to go back tomorrow and get it.” Well, I got it that evening when I dragged my boyfriend to go look at it (okay, didn’t drag. He was looking at getting a cellphone on clearance).

Well. So. I bought it. And the pencil. And a screen protector and cover. Man. I put all this on my credit card and now my bank account hates me and I’m feeling guilty AF!! But. It’s beautiful. And I’m going to draw tonight.

PS: I got mine at Incredible Connection because surprisingly, it was cheaper than iStore. I bought the Pencil from iStore as Incredible had run out of stock.

It’s that wonderful time of the year…

Well, for me at least. May is my birthday month. I love birthdays. Not for the presents, but for the people, the food, the celebrating. It’s just really nice to be able to sit down with the people you care about, share a meal or a chat, and just have a good time. Sometimes this isn’t always easy to accomplish other days of the year cos, life.

I put wishlists together because it’s one way to document to myself what I’m wanting, and if people want to get me something, this gives them a clear idea. I love receiving other people’s wishlists – it makes life so much easier! (I love gift giving!)

So here is my little list. I only wish I didn’t have such expensive taste!

Lamelle Recharge CE Complex – R760
Leigh from Lipgloss is my life gave this a rave review and I trust her opinion big time. Have you seen her skin? When I saw her blog post, I knew I needed this!

Smashbox Always On eyeliner (colour: Fishnet) – R275
The girls from All Dolled Up always talk about this! To this day I have not found an eyeliner that stays on my water line. I hope this does. A wonderful friend bought me this and so far… I’m so impressed!

La Source Exfoliating Body Scrub – R400
La Source is one of my favourite “rich-girl” scents, and scrubs are my favourite body product. Put two together? Oh yes! To be honest, anything from this range would be super dreamy!

Lancome Monsieur Big Mascara – R360
Allana Davison has *THE most* amazing eyelashes and she loves this stuff. I’m all about the voluminous lashes, so sign me up! Also received this as a gift. I haven’t cracked it open yet!

Physicians Formula Eye Booster Eyeliner (colour: Ultra black) – R200
Can be found at Dischem. It has a brush nib. What more could you want?

Eyeshadow base – depends on the brand
So many brands do this. Wet n Wild (R129) has one, as does Smashbox (R292) and Urban Decay (R330). I’ve recently hit the end of the one I’ve been using.

Lush It’s Raining Men Shower Gel – R175/R295
I put this on my list every year because it is my absolute favourite. Dirty Springwash is another option (it’s minty). I got Springwash and It’s Raining Men! So spoilt!

Urban Decay Essential Eye Tool – R260
Seriously random as well, but this is like the only brand that I can find that has the comb AND spooley. I found tons with one or the other. I was using one by Beautique but I haven’t been able to repurchase because it’s never available at Edgars. Maybe discontinued? I use this every day.

A birthday wishlist 2017

I find birthday wishlists helpful – it gives me a real idea of what the person would like, and it gives some suggestions. A friend asked if I was posting one this year, so I thought “why not?” Some of the things on this list are like ultimate wants and aren’t available in South Africa, but hey!

Charlotte Tilbury Instant Look in a Palette Beauty Glow or Natural Beauty – 49 GBP/R840
I would do bad things for this. I’ve been eyeing the Natural Beauty one for ages but then they launched Beauty Glow and my heart (the part where the beauty obsession exists) stopped for a moment. It was love at first sight. Sjoe. Anyway, they’re both beautiful. They do have a third (Seductive Beauty) but that one isn’t for me. If I was going to order this myself, I’d probably use Aramex Global Shopper (cos I’m not sure if the Tilbs delivers to SA or not). I got Natural Beauty from a few of my friends. And oh my gosh, is it beautiful!

Foreo Luna Play Plus – R620
Ultimately, I would love a Luna Mini 2, but that’s like R2500! The Play Plus is much nicer than the Play because you can replace the battery! The Play only has like 100 uses and then you chuck it, so this is a much better bet. It is also a much cheaper way of finding out if you like the device or not. Another potential love is the Luna Go (combination skin), but again, that’s R1750. So, Play Plus it is! In the colour purple, of course!

Lush It’s Raining Men Shower Gel – R175/R295
Every year I put this on my list – and for good reason. It is seriously one of my all time favourite shower gels. I don’t buy it for myself because a medium size is R175 and a large is R295 and that really is a bit silly to spend on a shower gel – except when it’s a gift 😉 I got this from the same bunch of friends who got me the CT palette. Love this stuff!

There are so many things that I want from this brand that I thought I’d just include it all under one heading. I currently use the Midnight Recovery Concentrate and I love it. Since my skin has been going insane (so dry and flaky lately), I thought maybe the morning oil would be a good addition – Daily Reviving Concentrate (R815). I’ve also got my eye on the Powerful-Strength Line-Reducing Concentrate, but that’s a bit spendy at R895. The Nightly Refining Micro-Peel Concentrate (R750) also looks good. And lastly, I have 2 masks on the list – the Cilantro & Orange Extract Pollutant Defending Masque R485) and Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Energizing Radiance Masque (R485).

Rose Gold Coat Hangers – R250 for 5
I know. Coat hangers. Like, what am I, a fashion blogger? But seriously though, I need new hangers, and these are adorable.

Smashbox Always On Gel Eyeliner in Fishnet – R250 (Red Square, Woolworths, Truworths Elements)
I’ve seen a few beauty bloggers talking about this black eyeliner. Apparently, you can use it on your waterline and it will not budge. I’m sad to say I’ve had a few horrible/cringy experiences where I have worn an eyeliner in my top waterline, believing the promise that it will not move… and it did… leaving me looking like a panda with a hangover. Ugh, just the thought makes me shiver.

Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream All Over Miracle Oil – R395 (Red Square, Woolworths, Stuttafords, Truworths Elements)
Apparently, this smells nothing like the original Eight Hour Cream… Thank god for that… Anyway, I’m running low on a body moisturiser and this is said to be the bees knees! Also got this from that same group of friends. Damn they spoiled the crap out of me!!

I have some other random ideas… Tom Ford Eye Defining Pen (probably costs the earth, so nevermind), Tom Ford Cocoa Mirage Eyeshadow Palette (well, if the eyeliner is bad, this’ll be worse), sheet masks (I love these and I’m really not picky!), Filorga Meso-Mask, Woodwick candles (they crackle!), Clarins Extra-Firming Day Cream (I’ve been through so many samples!), body scrubs (scrubbier the better!), mascara (I’m always looking for something that gives me uber volume)

I do have other ideas but yeah, maybe this will be some help, maybe it won’t. 24 days and counting 😛 Though, I’ll probably only celebrate in June with friends cos life.

The monthly wishlist is back

I guess I’m back on the lust list bandwagon. I didn’t do one last month… I sometime find these posts make me want to go out and buy all the things (but I still populate a list on my phone, so it’s kind of useless, right?) I’m trying to curb my spending, but I figured since I’m already keeping a list, I might as well publish one.

I’m really on a skincare THING at the moment. I think it’s the looming 30s which has inspired this new focus. I also just really like taking time out for myself, and a good skincare regime is a great way to do this.

Exuviance Super Retinol Concentrate – R850
Paula’s Choice 1% Retinol has been on my list for ages now, but at R1000+ for 30ml, I just can’t. Even at R850, I can’t really…but it is more affordable if I were to splurge. Which I probably won’t (but I really want to).

La Mer Limited Edition Bronzer
Just click that link and admire the beauty that is that bronzer. It’s been on my radar for a few months now (and the want has been real!) but I just kind of stored it away and that was that. Now I’m seeing it’s selling out fast and it’s creeping back into the foreground again because I really do want it but sjoe. I don’t even know if you can get it in South Africa. It’s probably gonna be around Dior price and up. That breaks my heart. Probably another item that won’t ever happen. RIP.

Loccitane Shea Melting Honey Exfoliating Sugars – R425
Ridiculously priced (can you see a trend here?) but it’s another thing that has been on the OMG-I-want list for AGES and now I see it’s available in South Africa… at a cost. Sob. There’s nothing I love more in this world than exfoliators… The scrubbier the better. I have no idea how this would fair but um, shea and honey? Sounds heavenly!

Exuviance Triple Micro-Dermabrasion Face Polish – R765
Basically, everything I want is too expensive to buy. This stuff sounds amazing. It’s both a physical and chemical exfoliator, and gets the thumbs up from All Dolled Up. I may actually consider this when I finish up my Ren Glycolactic Acid Exfoliator (which isn’t any time soon!) It is a bit more expensive than the Ren but I think it’d be worth it.

MAC x Star Trek
Where do I even begin with this? I pretty much want everything. I’m not a Trekkie (sorry, guys!) but the collection looks absolutely amazing. On my list are: Luna Luster Powder (pink), Highly Illogical powder (red/brown) (BOUGHT), To Boldy Go pressed pigment (red-ish) and The Naked Time pressed pigment (beige)

The Beauty Box Mini Organiser – R599
Another item that’s been on the list for ages. I’ve been wanting something to store my every day crap in and I think this will be perfect. I decided to just get it. It also came with a free accessory (nailpolish stand, lipstick stand or brush holder – I chose the brush holder). Very happy with it!

Here’s to hoping I stay on track this month!

Holes in my wardrobe

I’m not a capsule wardrobe sort of girl. In all honesty, I’d love to be but if I had to take a good look at what’s currently in my cupboard and remove all my overly worn/should be tossed due to holes, etc clothing, I’d probably be left with very little.

Then, if I had to assess what’s left and donate some, toss some and keep the rest, I’d probably have to pitch up at work naked at least once a week. Realistically, I don’t think many of us have the funds to replace everything at once, or replace them with the key expensive/quality pieces we’d really truly like.

That being said, I’ve got better at just buying things. There have been a few moments where I’ve hesitated buying something because do I really need it, then gone back to get it because its played on my mind and then realised no longer available. It’s a thin line, people!

Lately I’ve been thinking about some things I really do need to stock up on, so I thought I’d post a list as a reminder to myself. I like having a list somewhere – it keeps me on track!

  • Prescription sunglasses – I’m blind. I don’t wear contacts. I’ve been squinting in the sun way too long. Always buy out of season, right?
  • Raincoat – I’m not talking about those flimsy things you had when you were at school. More like something that is substantial, looks decent (like part of your outfit) and will keep you super dry. I’m thinking something from K-Way
  • Boots – I’ve been wearing a pair of Pick n Pay boots for the past 2 years. They have finally died. I’d really like to invest in a pair of leather boots. I do have two pairs of docs though – one pair knee high (zip needs replacing) and one ankle boot BUT the ankle boot (preferred style right now) is seriously hard on my feet. I haven’t been able to “walk them in” as the leather is so goddamned tough. I have tried everything under the sun to soften it but I just can’t. Anyone have any suggestions? I think I may just need to consider something softer.
  • Blazer – Believe it or not…I don’t own one of these. I like to think a black blazer can dress up any outfit. I want to maybe get one in ponte fabric…it’s a little more forgiving.
  • Trusty scarf – I need a black scarf. Something that will go with every outfit (or most of them). Silk, wool, whatever. I just need one. I wanted to wear one this morning but I didn’t have anything that would go with my outfit (blue and white striped breton thing, dark blue jeans, black boots)
  • Bras – More of them please. I recently just bought two Panache Sculptresse bras from Amazon (never again) and damn people, don’t underestimate a good bra. I want more. Stat. PS: why are large cup bras so expensive and like the mystical fucking unicorn? I guess I’ll be making friends with eBay or Storm in A-G Cup…
  • Leopard print flats – I want. They’re outrageous. I just want. There was so much drama around getting these but finally…finally…I got a pair of Dune Hero’s in leopard print on sale for R900 (22 August 2016!)
  • Pair of leather sandals – I have my eye on a pair from Jane Sews (I can’t choose between brick or black). I also want a pair of their loafers.
  • Wide brimmed floppy hat (black, felt?) – #palegingerproblemz

Other stuff I want but can wait:

  • Denim jacket – I have always wanted one of these. I’m keen to see if it would work with my style. I’m not entirely sure if this a MUST HAVE, but I’d like to try one on anyway, and decide from there.
  • Leather jacket – Same as above. Being bigger, things aren’t always available in your size and don’t always fit in the same way. Okay let me take that back… We all have a body shape that at some stage in our lives doesn’t really work with certain types or cuts of clothing. Maybe I’ll stumble upon one that will work. This is definitely an investment piece though, so I think I’d rather wait until my I’m in a space weight/shape-wise where I’m happy enough to commit to something long-term. This looks amaze. Seriously. And so does this
  • Cashmere jersey – there’s a stunning grey one at Poetry that I’d die to own BUT it’s like R1600 or something (HAAAAAA). Okay, I shouldn’t be laughing cos we all know cashmere is fucking expensive, but hey, this is a wishlist after all. Also, I can’t be trusted with cashmere. Seriously. If it doesn’t wash well, it’s doomed. Scrap that. No cashmere for me.
  • Black dress – I don’t own one. Not even one dress. Actually, fun fact: I don’t own anything longer than a pair of pants. No 3/4s, no shorts, no bathing costumes, no skirts and no dresses. The search for the perfect LBD is a goddamn struggle, people.

Urban Decay wishlist

My Urban Decay wishlist is something that I kept separate from my usual lists simply because we just couldn’t get the products here, or at least not very easily. BUT since Urban Decay is launching in SA this year, I thought I’d post my wishlist. Maybe it’ll inspire your own list?

Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Eyeshadow Palette
I love every single bloody thing about this palette. The colours, the container, Gwen..It’s EVERYTHING. I was very lucky to get this on sale and have a friend bring it home for me.

Urban Decay Eyeshadow Potion
I have no real preferences here. I’ve used the original and loved it. Minor Sin and Enigma look amazing, and the anti-aging one sounds like a great idea. I’d be happy owning any of these.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Coverage Concealer
I’m thinking Fair Neutral or Light Neutral are going to be a winner here. All I hear are good things about this stuff, so I’m keen.

Urban Decay De-Slick Oil-Control Makeup Setting Spray
I’m oily. This would probably be life.

Urban Decay De-Click Mattifying Powder
To go along with the spray. Cos I’m an oilslick, basically.

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Double Ended Eye Pencil
Naked is the winner for me. It comes with Whiskey and Zero. A black and a brown. Perfect.

Urban Decay Rapture Blush
This is like a plummy-brown colour. Much darker than anything I own but something about it draws me in!

Urban Decay Fetish Blush
So, like Rapture, this is quite muted, but the swatches look amazing. Again, not really something I own so it’d definitely be a unique addition.

Urban Decay Naked Ultra Nourishing Lipgloss
The colour Naked is another winner for me. I’ve wanted this since it was first released…yonks ago. A great my lips but better colour. Yes please!

Urban Decay Gwen Stefani Lipstick
Ex-Girlfriend all the way!

Urban Decay Naked Smoky
How can I say no to this? When I first saw it, I thought…nah… but it’s sucking me in! I can’t help it. It’s so pretty.

Birthday wishlist!

So, it was a toss-up between a monthly wishlist or an outrageous birthday lust list. Guess which won? I went through a bunch of old posts and the never ending list on my phone and have curated this little (yeah right) list. None of these things are on my family wishlist just in case any of my friends actually choose to use this one… Ahem.

  • Beauty Blender – R398
Ofcourse I had to add this one. I’ve been dying to try it for ages now. Can be found on 27Pinx, Placecol and Best of Beauty. Won this in a PinkPeonies competition!
  • Skoon Cleanser + Makeup Remover – R460
This stuff is amazing. Used/devoured my sample and now I’m back to the ol’ cleansing water… that needs to change, stat! Bought this myself. I got some birthday money, so I picked up a full size at Kamersvol in June 🙂
  • Lush It’s Raining Men shower gel – R175
My ultimate favourite body wash. Birthday gift!
  • Lush Salt Peppermint Bark scrub – R160
Only available in-store. I think it’s limited edition. This stuff is the BOMB. Birthday gift!
  • Lush Rub Rub Rub – R185/R125
The pot is luxurious! And the solid (yet to try) sounds so awesome
  • Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Gel Exfoliant – R450
    Always wanted to try this.
  • Benefit B.Right Radiant Skincare Set – R295
Nice way to test some Benefit skincare.
  • REN Omega 3 Optimum Skin Serum Oil – R550
Sjoe, this has gone up in price since the last time I saw it. Available at the link and Woolworths. Sounds dreamy. And Caroline Hirons gave it a good review!
  • Nuxe Aroma-Perfection Thermo-Active Mask – R195
Seen so many good reviews for this. Available at Truworths Elements/Truworths makeup counters.
  • Benefit Gimme Brow Light/Medium – R295
Always wanted to give this a go and now that Benefit is available in SA…
  • CND Vinylux Weekly Topcoat – R220
From Yemaya or Sorbet stores. All Dolled Up mentioned they got 10 days without chipping. What the hell????
  • Benefit Porefessional Matt Rescue – R395
This oily gal needs some help!
  • Essie Letter Press Artists Almanac 2016 – R400
  • The Brush Egg – R90
Cos cleaning your brushes is important!
  • MAC Mineralize Skin Finish Natural (Light or Light Plus – both will work) – R390
I’ve swatched both Light and Light Plus… I think Light Plus would work better – slightly more pink (my undertone), but hey! It’s so sheer, it doesn’t matter. Available from MAC!
  • MAC Prep + Prime Fix+ – R250
I’ve been wanting to snag one of the travel sizes of this stuff…which is cheaper than the R250…to foil eyeshadows with and just…experience the spritz. Present to self thanks to a little nudge from Jess
  • Pencil brush.
    Cos I don’t actually own one…
  • Scarf for winter – R599-R699. Yeah. Ridiculous price for a scarf, but hey. I’ve had my eye on the Trenery Cleo Stripe Jacquard scarf and the Trenery Alyssa scarf. Both are beautiful and pretty much fit with my wardrobe. Woohoo. Birthday gift from wonderful friends!
  • Rare Earth Crissy Cable Shrug – R499 (XL)
I have a bit of a love affair with Poetry. I have my eyeballs on the Locklyn navy cable pullover (see the theme here? Cable knit is my JAM) and tried the XL on – which fit, but wanted to try the L on and ran out of time. I’m hoping this one feels just as great as the Locklyn. I mean, the grey, the cable… oh my.
  • H&M Glass Box – R229
Ah, I love the home section of H&M. Damn. Anyway, I saw this ages ago and really loved the look of it but never ended up getting it. Thought I’d add it to the list. Birthday gift from my friends 🙂
  • Copper coat hangers – R380 for 5
Um, YES! I need like 20 of these 😛
  • Perfumes still on my wishlist: Dior Poison, YSL Black Opium, Dolce & Gabbana Pour Femme, Prada Candy…

And if I had a fairy godmother in the UK/US…

  • Caudalie Vinosource Moisturing Matifying Fluid – only the best moisturiser in the world *heart eyes*
  • Soap & Glory – The Breakfast Scrub (my all time favourite!), Rich & Foamous (the matching body wash), Solar Powder, One Heck of a Blot primer and powder… Pretty much anything from the cosmetic line… 😛
  • All the expensive stuff which I won’t list 😛

Wishing this March

Where has the time gone? Seriously. It’s MARCH. Almost halfway through March no less. Okay fine, a third of the way, but still. I swear, the older I get, the faster time goes by. I don’t like it one bit!

Onto the wishlist items, I think. A cheerier subject 🙂

Elizabeth Arden Grand Entrance Mascara – R290 (I think)
You will be mine! The wand looks just like the one from my favourite mascara, the Loreal Telescopic. Also, did you seen Camilla’s eyelashes? Sjoe. Here’s a story for you guys… I hate the Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara. I know, controversial! The mascara clumps on the wand, makes my eyelashes look…weird, the wand is just not that awesome… I can’t get my eyelashes to fan out nicely… The list could go on. Sorry guys.

Clinique Pep Start Eye Cream – R330
Been wanting this for over a month now but I didn’t think we’d actually get it. I mean, I’m still waiting for the Take the Day Off Cleansing Oil to hit our shores, and they’ve discontinued the Cleansing Balm (here, at least)… Back to the point, this sounds like everything I need in the morning.

Essie Letterpress Artists Almanac 2016 – R400 (I think)
I know, Christmas is practically around the corner (jokes.) but I’ve just finished my room and now I want something beautiful. This would do nicely on my table, I think. I’d also like to add the H&M copper baskets to this list, but then the list would be miles long, so nevermind.

CND Vinylux Weekly Topcoat
Alldolledup mentioned this in their February favourites and it sounds perfect. My nailpolish chips like nothing on earth. Maybe my nails just aren’t great for nailpolish, but I like to make a little bit of an effort every now and then. When I was younger, I just couldn’t do nailpolish. It always felt really heavy on my nails. It still does, actually, but when I started working at my current job, all the ladies looked so put together! So, I started making the effort and I now enjoy the ritual of it all.

Paula’s Choice Resist 25% Vitamin C Spot Treatment – R930
WHY does good skincare have to be so damn expensive? Okay, I know it’s to do with high quality/superior ingredients, etc, but it just makes me cry every time. This is definitely a WISH list item. This is more like a major splurge that won’t be happening this month.

Paula’s Choice Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment – R930
This won’t be happening either. But hey, a girl can wish.

Oh, and just in case anyone is wondering, I did end up getting the Dior highlighter. Sigh. Let’s have a rant session, shall we?

Edgar’s beauty department. I wish I had good things to say about them but I just don’t. At least not the Cavendish branch. Things have sort of compounded over the last year and a bit. It could have been longer, but I really started paying attention to the bad service when I was on the hunt for a particular Bobbi Brown product.

So, whenever this was…maybe March or June last year, I enquired about a bronzer and was told that it was being discontinued but maybeeee it would be rereleased again. I asked the girl if she could find out if any of the other Edgar’s or Red Square’s had stock of it and she told me no. No one has it. So I asked how she could be sure – discontinued doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, after all. But no, she was adamant.

I tried phoning other stores a few days later, but try getting anyone in Edgar’s to pick up the phone… Anyway, I decided maybe I should go back in store and speak to another sales assistant, so I did just that. This time, the girl told me that she doesn’t have access to the other stores and I’ll just have to call them. Great. Thanks for all your help.

I tried calling Edgar’s and Red Square stores again, but was met with endless ringing phones, busy beeps and confusion. In the end, I changed tack. Maybe I should phone the place I think it won’t be at… So I called Red Square in Constantia Village. They’re really small, so I figured they wouldn’t have a comprehensive collection. I was so wrong. Not only was the girl super friendly but she had the product. She kept it aside for me and my mom picked it up and that was that.

Fast forward a few months… I was looking for a new foundation and had my eyes set on the Dior Forever foundation. I went to the counter on a Saturday morning, and there was no sales assistant. God, I must have tried for about 3 or 4 weeks and every time the sales ladies were either out on break, sick or just didn’t come in.

Eventually, one Saturday I was very lucky and caught one of them. I asked if I could get a sample of the Dior foundation as I wanted to see how it worked with my skin. She said she doesn’t have Forever samples but she was willing to put it on my face. Now, I don’t like this because I find most sales assistants are seriously heavy handed. Also, they prep my skin using products I don’t have at home, so I don’t get a clear idea how it would sit on my skin. AND, I was wearing makeup already. I didn’t want to take it off!!

I asked if I could get a pump or two in a sample pot. No, they don’t have sample pots. So I asked if I bought a pot, could she help me out. No, they don’t usually do that. What. This is like a R700+ foundation and you won’t even let me try it????

I ended up going back the next Saturday where, surprise surprise, no one was in. I had bought myself a pot and I helped myself to a sample. I wore it to my friend’s wedding and really liked it. They would have had a sale out of me. But no.

This leads to the next drama I had. I was super late for the Tie Dye collection and to be honest, I just didn’t have the cash at the time, so I just left it. I decided one day, a month or two later, to enquire about the Tie Dye blush on the off chance that they still had one in stock. More ringing phones.

Finally, I went in and asked. The lady there, although sweet and helpful, tried to sell me the orange shade (I wanted pink, but she only had orange in stock) under the premise that I’m “very pink. Pink would look bad on you. It would just make you look sweaty” – thanks, ladycakes. Yes, I have pink undertones. Yes, I’m pretty pink, but I had also walked there, was red and hot from the sun and wasn’t wearing makeup. And also, so what if I’m pink???

I realise she was trying to make a sale, but there are better ways to go about it. I felt insulted and pissed off. I tweeted about it, got a call, etc, but that doesn’t really do much. I didn’t want an apology. I just wanted them to be aware that their service sucks. I’d also like to point out that not every salesperson has sucked. I just happen to get some really tactless ones.

Then, this highlighter saga. I realise its not their fault that they didn’t know when it’d be launched, but I put my name down at multiple stores. I was promised by multiple salespeople that they would call me as soon as it arrived. I didn’t receive one phone call. I ended up just popping in to Edgar’s Cavendish one day and there it was. It had arrived the previous Thursday.

I told the sales lady (someone was there for once!) that I had put my name down…how come I hadn’t been called? She just looked embarrassed. To boot, it was the most expensive makeup item I have ever bought.

I just don’t understand this level of don’t-give-a-fuck. I feel that as a potential paying customer, or even just an interested consumer, that I should be allowed to test a foundation under my own terms. I don’t apply my foundation with a flat foundation brush, and when the saleslady grabbed that trusty tool of hers, I almost ran. I want to see how the foundation works on my skin with my own products. I want to be able to wear it more than once because a lot of my choices are driven by longevity and facial oil, and that changes from day to day.

Samples should be available for all skintones and should be restocked regularly. If stock isn’t available, they should allow sample pots. I’m not asking for half a bottle here. Just enough to apply it once or twice to see how it looks.

And with regards to helpfulness and actually being AVAILABLE in store… yeah, they have a lot to work on.

All I want this February…

…is a lot of things, apparently. Whoops. Hi again. So, I’m still lusting after the Dior highlighter (anyone know when the spring collection will hit stores?) and the BeautyBlender (I see it’s R398 over here). But really, the lusting never ends. So what’s on the list this month?

The BeautyBox Mini Organiser – R599 (+R100 shipping)
I have the 3 drawer organiser, which I love! But my collection has sort of outgrown that, and I’ve changed where I actually do my makeup. I was doing it in front of the mirror, standing and now that I’ve actually tidied my room, I’m sitting at my desk. So, I thought a nice little organiser to put on my desk with my daily beauty crap could be a winner. Let’s see.

Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser – $18/R290
This stuff looks awesome. I almost clicked buy earlier this month but then I saw in the FAQ that they don’t accept international credit cards and I started wondering if a South African credit card would be considered international. I mean, is an international credit card a card you can use anywhere in the world, or a card that is not native to the United States?

Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair – R700
I’ve always, always, always wanted to try this. I’m getting wrinkles, guys. It’s horrible 😥 I realise now is too late to turn back time but maybe I can try slow things down? I don’t know. Anyway, this is a pricey little endeavour but I heard that ANR lasts forever. Can anyone back this up? Got this in May for my birthday! 😀

Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant – R460
I have oily skin and apparently BHAs are awesome for people like me. I’ve been wanting to try Paula’s Choice for ages now and just never got around to it. Maybe I should just take the plunge?

I think only the highlighter is going to happen this month, to be honest. I’m planning on painting my room – that takes money – and maybe buy new curtains (mine are currently black…not going to suit the new colour scheme) and might get a few decor bits. Okay, so maybe I’ll get the organiser too 😛

What’s on your list this month?

The January (I’m so broke!) wish list

Thanks to the festive season, January is a pretty thin month when it comes to shopping. I did make a splurge this month – I got the MAC x Ellie Goulding Halcyon Nights palette – but I had been putting money aside for that. Wondering if it’s any good? Well, let’s just say it’s all I’ve had on my eyes since it arrived in the post. Seriously loving it.

There’s still a bunch of things from last year that are still on my list – the GlamPalm Standard hair straightener (the one I’ve been using for the last 5+ years has started overheating and burning the crap out of me, so I think maybe this should happen sooner rather than later) and the Fossil Preston Small Flap bag in black, for example. Both are R2500-ish, so…all big investments for me. We’ll see – both of those WILL happen one day, just not now.

Onto the more obtainable things… Sort of…

  • Dior Diorskin Nude Air Illuminating Powder 001 (glowing pink) from the Dior Spring 2016 collection. Hopefully this will hit stores sometime soon! This will probably be way too much money for what it’s worth. R850-ish? FINALLY! This happened at the end of February 🙂 It’s beautiful! But it was so expensive…
  • Polar A360 fitness tracker – R3200. Okay…I do really want this but again… something this expensive is just not happening now. Maybe for my birthday. Maybe not. I thought I’d just list it here anyway.
  • Zana x Superbalist Cat Nap Duvet Cover Queen – R999. Alright, I give up. None of these things will happen.
  • TheBalm Balm Desert Bronzer – R320. I’m waiting for this to come back in stock on Retailbox. I think this could make a good blush/bronzer hybrid.
  • Skoon Cleanser + Make-up remover – R460. Oh my, this sounds interesting. This locally made cleanser is a gel to milk formula and claims to remove makeup. I’d love to give this a go. Also, their exfoliating mask looks absolutely amazing too!
  • Eyeliner brush – I asked around on Twitter and I’m going to go check out the Inglot offering. Looks like it’s exactly what I want from a brush. Bought the Inglot 30T eyeliner brush. The girl kept telling me it was the 31T. Sigh. Anyway, got the right one in the end! Busy putting it to the test/getting used to the bent/angled brush, etc.
  • BeautyBlender – R350? I want to know what the hype is all about!

Realistically… none of this is happening! See you in February for another of these lists!
